Complementary and powerful urban network

Since July 4th 2007, The Marseilles City Transport Authority (RTM) which is spread all around the city, optimize the complementarity between the tree modes of transport: bus, subway and tramway. Global traffic in 2007: more than 150 millions passengers.

These multiplicity of collective transports, satisfy not only the quality criterium but also the rising needs of the population under the boost of Marseille-Provence Metropolis Urban Community developpment and the city itself. The city’s public transport system is very dense. All systems are operated by RTM, so there is no distinction between subway, bus and tram tickets, which can be purchased at subway stations or shops displaying the blue and yellow RTM sign. In Marseille, modernity and environment, both are bonded. Transport network take part into sustainable development. That’s why ecological tramway, electrical subways, and then ecological bus permit to reduce CO2 emission to 92 %.

Subway: Fast and scheduled

Two subway lines that both stop at the main train station and run north and south in the downtown area: with an overall length of 19 km, 24 stations, 36 rams with can transport 400 persons. Trains run from 5:00 until 22:30 every day. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, trains run until 0:30. There are trains every 5 minutes and every 3 to 4 minutes during rush hours.bSince summer 2006, Rose Workshop is charged of care of rails equipments and technical revision for 144 cars.

To 2009, four extensions will be available on Line 1. Stations and receptions are going to be renovated in order to offer a better comfort, and more security for passengers (are coming into service 600 cameras). Modern, more luminous and comfortable, the new car will be ready soon for the customer.

Tramway, an essential part for the global network

Marseille’s tramway, with 26 trams and allowing 200 persons per ram, serve line Calliols/Euroméditerranée-Gantes and St Thérèse Eugène Pierre. A new tram network is being built in Marseille, which, when finished in 2011 will consist of three tram lines.The first phase opened on June 30th 2007. It is part of an urban renewal project which aims to reduce car use and favour pedestrians, bicyclists and public transit users.

In mid-2008, two further extensions will be opened. Line 1 will be extended to Eugène Pierre Noailles via an existing tunnel, and Line 2 will be extended north from Euroméditerranée to Euroméditerranée-Arenc. Moreover, company does not forget to help travellers with reduced mobility, the partially-sighted persons and deaf people to get an easier access to cars and information.

Bus, a local mean of transport

Complementary to the tram and the subway, bus is other way to go through the city. These networks are tighter with more bus stops. As user needs are always growing more and more, the network is continiously in expansion to optimize the synchronicity with the other mean of transports. RTM is really careful to satisfy rising customers needs and so that put in place LOREIV system which is panels information which are updated at each bus stops and specify schedule of waiting before the following.

To Know: As a tourist and cultural passport, the Marseille City Pass is valid for 1 or 2 days (20 euros 1 day / 27 euros 2 days). This pass is dedicated to individual visitor who wish to discover Marseille with an all-inclusive package. It allows to take advantage of a fantastic offers including free admissions into 14 museums (Museum of Mediterranean Archeology, Marine Museum, Natural History Museum, Fashion Museum…) and above all, the free access to all RTM’ public transports until the pass’ validity end.
